Ides (Bastard near Bethlehem)
March! For ROCK’s edgy challenge

What’s edgier than a knife?
Nothing, according to Julius,
not surgical birth
nor a salad with anchovies.
Where is our Brutus?
Damn sure not in the Senate.
Berlin in Boston.
Welcome to the Department of just ICE.

Cleopatra was cleaner,
snagged a Tony while she was at it,
seducing with her body:
eyes of kohl, dangerous curves,
serpentine sway of hips.
That killer asp.

This mockery of Rome
with shit-smeared walls housing cowards
who use their knives at dinner,
or chuckle at their clever ability
to rest blades in the carcass of history
while a minotaur who doesn’t know the labyrinth
rages through once-hallowed halls,
the room Henry Clay held together by eloquent force.
the compromised compromiser compromised beyond the grave.
When roses last in Jackie’s garden grew, the East Wing stood.

Now bullies wave banners, call hatred heritage.
Checks unbalanced, books overcooked. How long til they burn?
Our decline staring us in the face, Faulkner in Stockholm and Eliot in England,
Bombs to make us stop reading.

Willie’s prick never slipped a trick like this. Protective perjury? Maybe Justice should shuck off that blindfold, see how the scales tip when the tail wags the dog.

Church and State, meanwhile, birth a bastard west of Bethlehem.
We’re fucked.

Your use of juxtaposition to highlight the threat of a knife against the weak use of it to eat food was highly effective at unarming the attempt at mockery. I felt the strongest emotional pull in the section regarding Henry Clay. Using diacope with the phrase "the compromised compromiser compromised" drove home the disturbance and the taunting perfectly. It highlights a sheer disrespect for all he achieved, even as he lies in his grave. Brilliant work! 🤗🌼
This is so clever and memorable. I love it! You're quite adept with words.
There be Bastards everywhere. Well said.
Vicious excellentce
Razor edged brilliance, Harper! How long will this nightmare continue?
So many momentous moments in history captured in your words and which might otherwise have been lost to history.
You put razor-sharp words to horrible deeds to tell it like it is, not how it gets spun. Good writing on bad acting. Ty.
Yup! All of this. Your words are great. Shame our leaders are so evil, corrupt, disgusting. ❤️
Ugh!!! This world sucks, but your poem was cool and edgy AF! 🤩
That’s very edgy and straightforward, Harper.
Brilliant in every way!!
