Looking at You

A poem of grief

Looking at you is hard

You look just like her

And though we’ve come so far,

it’s still a trigger

Her death looms over us all,

the red dirt still swollen on her grave

When I received the call,

I died, too, that day

You no longer feel like my wife

Just the mother of my daughter

whose mannerisms are rife

with those you yourself taught her

Husbands are meant to lead

but I no longer yearn

to be the one you need

when our baby won’t return

Your tears soak my shirt

while my own face remains wet

I trust time will heal the hurt,

but neither of us has stopped yet

Looking at you is necessary

to remind me she was here

I want to keep you far away

Instead I draw you near
