The Works of Memory

growth in unexpected ways

I keep thinking

about how

memory works;

how it’s just

me

picking things

up from the ground

of my life

and putting them

away.

*

Sometimes saved

and cherished.

Sometimes locked away

and forgotten.

*

I don’t organize anything.

I am more likely

to remember something

from age seven,

then something from age four,

then from age thirteen.

It’s never in order,

always random,

and all over the place.

*

I don’t know

why certain moments

stay with me forever.

They just do.

*

Like

the way

someone laughed

(at me or another)

or the pauses

between hard conversations.

*

Sadly,

it’s always

so negative.

*

Why?

*

I’d rather

remember

happier things

but instead,

my mind gathers

what really shapes me.

*

I didn’t grow

from happiness.

*

I grew from

sadness,

and pain,

and everything in-between.

*

And I hold these memories

close, because

despite the bad,

I let it lead me to something

good.

*

And I guess

it’s the only way

I know how

to remember my life

without losing its pieces.

Luna, this hit home for me... really relatable and painful! Know that you're not alone! 💚

“From the ground of your life," I like how you have worded this. The contrast between "saved and cherished" and "locked away and forgotten" deepens your poem. Your thoughts on how memory sneaks up on a person, using the age they were a part of to depict how it jumps around, was rather effective. "Pauses between hard conversations" is relatable. It made me pause, think, and nod in agreement.

  • Back to say congratulations on your Top Story! 🎉💖🎊🎉💖🎊

We remember what we remember no telling why we remember only the bad or the good or the in-between. Good job.

  • This was so profound, poignant, and emotional. Loved it!
