The U.S. Air Force’s NGAD 6th Generation Fighter Is Making a Comeback The U.S Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance NGAD program aimed at developing a sixth generation fighter jet is making significant strides despite earlier budgetary uncertainties. Recent developments including a $3.5 billion engine development contract awarded by the Pentagon signal a renewed commitment to the program. This move comes as global competitors particularly China, accelerate their own sixth generation fighter initiatives pushing the U.S. to maintain its edge in air superiority. The NGAD program which had faced delays due to budget constraints is now back on track. On January 27, 2025 the Pentagon awarded two major contracts worth $3.5 billion to General Electric and Pratt & Whitney for the development of advanced engines for the NGAD fighter. These prototype engines are expected to be ready by 2032 marking a critical step forward in the program’s progression.
